A comprehensive review of how two interesting and economically important desert succulent taxa respond, in what turn out to be remarkably similar ways, to specific environmental factors such as water, temperature, photosynthetic active radiation, and nutrients. Park Nobel first summarizes early environmental research as well as the many ethnobotanical uses of agaves and cacti. He then develops the main themes by considering in detail the three most studied species: Agave deserti, Ferocactus acanthodes, and Opuntia ficus-indica. Much of the research has been carried out in his own laboratory since the mid-1970s. He also takes a comparative approach, presenting data on 40 species of agave and nearly 200 species of cacti, and concludes with predictions of the productivity of these desert succulents over wide geographical areas as well as in specific ecological situations, emphasizing principles of broad biological applicablity. |
